In this case study, I explore how generative AI concepts in the mobile space, like text to image generation, and personalized content creation, can elevate consumer pin creation and ad campaign creation process, enhancing both quality and efficiency for advertisers and consumers.

To understand the best approach to help advertisers create high quality campaigns with generative AI, I looked across the industry. Midjourney, OpenartAI and Playground were instrumental in identifying effective generative AI design patterns and best practices that could inform my approach to Pinterest's advertising tools. Midjourney and OpenAI showed how prompt filters can help users refine images and improve designs. Playground showed how language prompts such as "Add", "Replace" etc. can help guide users towards text to image editing. These insights laid a foundation for my design approach.

Text to Pin Ad Creation for Advertisers

Home decor is one of the biggest markets on Pinterest. IKEA, Wayfair, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, CB2 all use Pinterest to attract customers leveraging the visual nature of Pinterest. By leveraging generative AI to create data informed ads, advertisers can increase relevancy, speed to market, and quality.

CB2 Ad Creation

In this prototype, CB2 uses text to image generative AI to produce an ad of their top 3 highest selling products in a single, visually appealing image.

Generative AI in the Consumer Space

Pin Creation with Generative AI 

In the prototype below, I explore how consumers can use generative AI to produce unique pins based on their own unique images. A user:

1. Selects "Pin" from the "plus" menu,

2. Selects an image from their camera roll

3. Selects "Edit with AI" in the bottom right hand corner

4. Selects the AI Filter

5. Chooses minimalist style and blue color and applies the changes

6. Selects the search bar, clicks "Add" and "Enter" on the keyboard

7. Views their final image

Further refinement can happen through text or filters. From there, the user can create the pin and post it to their board.

Imagine a blank canvas for consumers to dream, explore and inspire. I believe this will drive greater engagement and brand loyalty across all of Pinterest.

Image Editing with Generative AI 

In the prototype below, I explore how consumers can use generative AI to edit pins of their own unique images.

A user:

1. Selects "Pin" from the "plus" menu,

2. Selects an image from their camera roll

3. Selects "Next"

4. Selects the pencil icon on the image

5. Clicks "AI" in the footer toolbar

6. Applies styles to the image

7. Clicks "Done"

I believe this approach aligns with Pinterest’s commitment to visual discovery and offers a forward-thinking strategy to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving space. Generative AI has the power to transform both the consumer and advertiser experiences on Pinterest. By integrating generative AI features such as text-to-image generation, personalized content creation, and advanced AI filters, Pinterest can streamline and elevate the creative process, making it easier for advertisers to build high-quality, engaging ad campaigns while empowering consumers to craft unique pins that drive engagement and brand loyalty.
